Vanlife New Zealand: Our 10 Survival Tips for the Perfect Road Trip
If you've ever dreamed of driving through New Zealand with the window down, the salty wind in your hair and breathtaking views around every bend: Yes, it really is as magical as it sounds! But living in a van in pursuit of the next adventure isn't just about picturesque sunsets and the ultimate feeling of freedom. A little planning often makes the difference between a smooth trip and a moment when you think: "If only we had known that before!"
After countless kilometers during our four months in the van, we've learned a thing or two. Here are our 10 ultimate tips that will guarantee your Kiwi road trip is unforgettable – and a whole lot more relaxed.
1. Keep daily essentials close at hand 🎒
You don't want to turn the van upside down every time just to find your toothpaste in the dark at night. Important clothes, toiletries, snacks and yes, even your after-work drink should always be within easy reach. You'll be extremely grateful to yourself when it's cold at night and you just want to fall into bed.
2. Store the "occasional stuff" properly ⛺
Large backpacks, the spare tent or thick sleeping bags? They go in the harder-to-reach corners under the bed. Reserve the best and most accessible storage space strictly for the things you really need every day.
3. Tidy up a little every day 🧹
In such a small space, a little mess can very quickly feel like total chaos. Take a few minutes every day to put things back in their place and quickly sweep the floor. It makes van life so much more pleasant mentally!
4. Make room for good food 🥑
Don't underestimate how much space fresh fruit, vegetables and cooking utensils need. Cooking your own food is always worth it on a road trip: It's significantly cheaper, healthier and a thousand times better than living off gas station pies for weeks (as tempting as they may be at first).
5. Bring a spice rack 🧂
A small spice rack or a well-organized spice box can completely transform your simple camping meals. It also looks cute and keeps the small kitchen tidy. Who says van life food has to taste boring?
6. Pack string lights ✨
String lights mean instant coziness. They are extremely practical as soft light in the van at night, but also pure magic when you're parked with the tailgate open directly under the New Zealand starry sky.
7. Get blackout curtains 🌙
Trust us on this one: You'll sleep so much better! Whether you're forced to park next to a streetlamp or at a busy campsite – good blackout curtains give you the privacy you need and the feeling of really being able to rest in your own little space.
8. Carry jumper cables 🚗
Dead batteries happen faster than you think (keyword: leaving string lights on too long!). Jumper cables can save your trip – and your mood – at the crucial moment. Being well prepared means less panic when you're stranded in the middle of nowhere.
9. Always look under the van 👀
Before you start the engine and drive off, take a quick look under and around the vehicle. You'll be surprised what all ends up down there and gets forgotten. For example, the wet shoes from the day before. Not that we're speaking from our own experience... (okay, we are!).
10. Shower at the public pool 🚿
One of the best backpacker hacks ever: Public pools (Aquatic Centres) in New Zealand usually have sparkling clean, hot showers that you can use for very little money. An absolute dream after a long, muddy hike or a salty day at the beach!
A road trip through New Zealand is pure magic. Mountains, beaches, ancient forests and everything in between. It's exactly these little comforts and smart habits that make your journey truly stress-free. To smooth roads, epic views and always a little sand in your shoes!
Stay adventurous,
