10 Real-World Tips for an Epic New Zealand Road Trip

If you’ve ever dreamed of cruising through New Zealand, windows down, wind in your hair, and jaw-dropping views around every corner—let me tell you, it’s just as magical as it sounds. But living out of a van (or car) while chasing adventures isn’t only sunsets and freedom. A little planning goes a long way in keeping the trip smooth, comfortable, and drama-free.

After plenty of miles and a few “wish we’d known that sooner” moments, here are my 10 tried-and-true tips for making the most of your Kiwi road trip.

1. Keep Your Daily Essentials Handy
You don’t want to dig through every bag just to find toothpaste. Keep clothes, toiletries, snacks, and yes—even a cheeky bottle of wine—within easy reach. You’ll thank yourself when it’s dark, cold, and you just want to crawl into bed.

2. Hide Away the ‘Sometimes’ Stuff
Backpacks, tents, and sleeping bags? Tuck them in harder-to-reach spots. Save your prime storage space for the things you actually use every day.

3. Tidy as You Go
In a tiny space, a little mess feels like a lot of mess. Spend a few minutes each day putting things back where they belong and giving the floor a quick sweep. It makes van life way more pleasant.

4. Make Room for Good Food
Don’t underestimate how much space fresh fruit, veggies, and cooking gear take up. You’ll want to cook your own meals often—it’s cheaper, healthier, and way tastier than surviving on petrol station pies (as tempting as they are).

5. Bring a Spice Rack
A simple spice shelf or box can completely transform your camp meals. Plus, it looks cute and keeps everything organized. Who says van life food has to be boring?

6. Pack Fairy Lights
Fairy lights = instant cozy vibes. They’re practical for light at night, but also make evenings feel magical—especially when you’re parked up under a sky full of New Zealand stars.

7. Get Blackout Curtains
Trust me: you’ll sleep so much better. Whether you’re parked by a streetlight or in a busy holiday park, blackout curtains give you privacy and help you feel snug and secure.

8. Carry Jumper Cables
Dead batteries happen. Having jumper cables on hand can save your trip (and your mood). Being prepared means fewer panicked calls for help.

9. Always Check Under the Van
Before you drive off, take a peek under your vehicle. You’d be surprised what can roll under there—like shoes. Not that I’m speaking from personal experience or anything… (okay, I totally am).

10. Use Public Pool Showers
One of the best hacks: local public pools usually have clean, hot showers for a small fee. Perfect after a long hike or beach day.

Road-tripping through New Zealand is pure magic—mountains, beaches, forests, and everything in between. But it’s the little comforts and smart habits that make the journey stress-free and unforgettable. Here’s to smooth roads, epic views, and maybe a little sand in your shoes. Take Care!
